Introducing All Hope Is Gone, the powerful fourth studio album by the renowned American heavy metal band Slipknot.
The groundwork for All Hope Is Gone began in 2007, with recording commencing in February 2008 in Slipknot's home state of Iowa. Leading up to the album's launch, the band generated excitement by unveiling promotional images and audio samples through various online platforms.
At the time of its release, All Hope Is Gone showcased Slipknot's most diverse sound, incorporating elements from their previous three albums. Departing from their nu-metal roots, the band embraced a groove metal style, evident in tracks like the intense opening song "Gematria (The Killing Name)" and the powerful title track. These offerings demonstrated Slipknot's brutal, death metal-influenced edge, reminiscent of their early work. The album also explored slower, atmospheric tracks like "Gehenna," reminiscent of their second album Iowa, and featured more introspective and emotive songs such as "Dead Memories" and "Snuff."
Lyrically, All Hope Is Gone delves into themes of anger, disaffection, obsession, and commentary on the music industry. Notably, the album ventures into more overtly political territory compared to Slipknot's previous releases. To support the album's success, Slipknot embarked on a world tour and made notable appearances at the Mayhem Festival, captivating audiences with their electrifying performances.
Critically acclaimed, All Hope Is Gone achieved remarkable success, securing the top position on nine record charts worldwide, including the coveted Billboard 200—marking Slipknot's first album to achieve this feat. In the United States, it garnered platinum certification from the RIAA on August 10, 2010, for shipping over one million copies. Clocking in at 57 minutes and 57 seconds, it stands as Slipknot's second-shortest studio album, following their 2022 release, The End, So Far. Tragically, it also represents the band's final studio album to feature their complete original lineup, including bassist and founding member Paul Gray, who passed away in an Iowa hotel on May 24, 2010, nearly two years after the album's release. Additionally, drummer Joey Jordison, a longtime member, departed from the group in December 2013.
