Darkthrone hail from Norway having formed back in the ’80s as a death metal band later evolving into a black metal sound influenced by the likes of Hellhammer, Celtic Frost & Bathory. Early on the band adopted the visual aesthetic of wearing corpse paint and band member psydonyms "Fenriz", "Nocturno Culto" and "Zephyrous". Their first three albums A Blaze in the Northern Sky, Under a Funeral Moon and Transilvanian Hunger are known in scene circles as the Unholy trinity being some of the most influential albums of the entire black metal genre. Fenriz had a solo project Isengard from the late 80s to mid-’90s. The infamous Varg Vikernes from Burzum has contributed lyrics to the albums Transilvanian Hunger and Panzerfaust. Members of Darkthrone have been associated with other bands such as Taake, Valhall, Satyricon, blackened thrash metal band Aura Noir and others. The band have remained a duo from Transylvanian Hunger album onwards and don’t ever play live, with a staunch DIY attitude they record everything themselves using as basic equipment as possible and have been prolific in releasing an album every few years and now have a discography of over twenty releases.
