Deftones' third studio album, White Pony, emerged on June 20, 2000, under Maverick Records, helmed by producer Terry Date, known for his work on their earlier albums, Adrenaline (1995) and Around the Fur (1997). Recorded between August and December 1999 at Larrabee Sound Studios in West Hollywood and The Plant Recording Studios in Sausalito, California, this album marked a significant evolution in the band's sound. It blended elements from various genres like post-hardcore, trip hop, shoegaze, progressive rock, and post-rock with their signature alternative metal style.

White Pony also marked the official inclusion of Frank Delgado as a full-time member, bringing his expertise in turntables and synthesizers after contributing as a guest on their prior works. Additionally, it saw Chino Moreno's debut in contributing rhythm guitar parts, expanding the band's sonic palette.

Critically acclaimed upon release and in retrospective appraisals, White Pony is hailed as one of Deftones' most mature achievements at that juncture. Noteworthy tracks include the successful singles "Change (In the House of Flies)" and "Back to School (Mini Maggit)," alongside the promotional single "Digital Bath" and the Grammy-winning "Elite" for Best Metal Performance in 2001. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the album received a reissue in December 2020, accompanied by Black Stallion, a remix album complementing White Pony's legacy.
