In 1976, Black Sabbath embraced change by managing themselves and exploring new sounds on their seventh studio album, Technical Ecstasy. The record reached #13 in the UK and was certified gold in the US. To honor this daring album, a Super Deluxe Edition is being released on October 1st as a 4CD set. This collection includes a newly remastered version of the original album, a brand-new mix by Steven Wilson, and over 90 minutes of previously unreleased outtakes, alternative mixes, and live tracks.
In the summer of 1976, Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward recorded Technical Ecstasy at Criteria Studios in Miami, following their world tour for Sabotage. During this tour, their live performances began incorporating keyboards and synthesizers, which were then introduced into the recording process for Technical Ecstasy. The album features a range of styles, from the hard-charging "Back Street Kids" and the ballad "It’s Alright" to the funky "All Moving Parts (Stand Still)" and the progressive "Gypsy." Notably, "It’s Alright" features lead vocals by Bill Ward, a first for the band.
The Super Deluxe Edition includes a newly remastered version of the eight-track album, along with a new mix by Steven Wilson using the original analog tapes. It also features eight previously unreleased outtakes and alternative mixes, including different versions of "You Won’t Change Me" and "Rock ’n’ Roll Doctor," as well as outtake and instrumental versions of "She’s Gone." The collection is rounded out with 10 previously unreleased live tracks from the 1976-77 Technical Ecstasy World Tour, featuring songs from different eras of the band's history, such as "Black Sabbath" and "War Pigs," alongside new tracks like "Gypsy" and "Dirty Women."
The set comes with an extensive booklet featuring artwork, liner notes, rare memorabilia, and photos from the era, plus a replica of the 1976-77 world tour concert book and a large color poster.
